The Little Book That Beats the Market

The Little Book That Beats the Market - Joel Greenblatt, Andrew Tobias The advice given in the book about the 'magic formula' sounds good and the author backs it up with past 17 years of results. Its about picking 20-30 stocks with high Return on Capital and available in bargain prices. Its a quite unique way of investing as you need to keep selling the stocks around one year mark and then buy new ones with the magic formula. His website is free to find the stocks out using the 'magic formula'. But, its like a process which needs time and patience (and ofcourse money) and needs constant (atleast once in a few months to buy/sell stocks) monitoring. The book is an easy read with nice examples to press forth the fundamentals of investing in general.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk!

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk - Al Ries, Jack Trout A short and concise way to teach the laws of marketing. It's full of examples though I would beg to differ with the law of line extension as the author was totally against it. Nevertheless, a wonderful book.

The White Tiger: A Novel

The White Tiger - Aravind Adiga A fiction in the form of letter, tells a story of a murderer told by him in the form of a letter to Chinese Premier. A satirical take on India's rural class, administrations, politicians, law and order and other civic functions. A saddening truth which even though I would like to deny but can't do it with full conviction.

Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity

The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity - Amartya Sen A book of 16 collected essays from Sen on topics like Argumentative history of India, Inequality, Tagore, Identity. Very relevant and thought provoking.

I Will Teach You to Be Rich

I Will Teach You To Be Rich - Ramit Sethi It's a very good book on personal finance because it covers quite a wide range of topics and explains them in easy-to-understand language. Part of it deals with US based retirement accounts like 401(k) and Roth IRA which wasn't interesting to me but I liked the overall book.

Mortal Causes (Dead Letter Mysteries)

Mortal Causes - Ian Rankin I found this book quite mature than the ones before in the Inspector Rebus series and with an engrossing plot.

THE BLACK BOOK

The Black Book - Ian Rankin I liked the book with many loose ends to start with and everything coming together at the end.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald It's not an easy read but the story has immense depth and it's wonderfully written. Satire of a certain period of time in America is told through a tragic love story.

Strip Jack

Strip Jack - Ian Rankin My second Det. Insp. Rebus novel and I liked it better than the first one (Knots and Crosses). A plot involving conspiracy against a MP which gets ugly with the murder of his wife. A psycho killer set loose in Edinburg and some rare book collection stolen further complicates/enriches the plot. Ofcourse it goes without saying that all mysteries gets resolved by the end of the novel.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist - A simple to read story about following one's dreams.

The Death of Vishnu: A Novel

The Death of Vishnu - Manil Suri The book started well for me with all the charaters living in a building in Mumbai developing but I couldn't enjoy it enough when the description about the dream of reincarnation of one of the flat owners started.

Swiss Watching: Inside Europe's Landlocked Island

Swiss Watching: Inside Europe's Landlocked Island - Diccon Bewes A good, light read about Swiss and it's many peculiarities and what makes it different - 'landlocked island'.

Angels & Demons (Robert Langdon)

Angels & Demons - Dan Brown Dan Brown classic which takes place in Rome and Vatican. Thrilling and captivating till the end.

Siddhartha

Siddhartha - A story about Siddhartha's spiritual journey to find the truth and in the process himself. The enthralling journey takes him to saints, merchants, courtesan, ferryman, etc. With each acquaintance he learnt something which took him near to the truth. Short and concise novel and a classic.
